... I'm back in Vienna! And ready to update on what I did two weeks ago in Vienna before leaving for Germany.

The feast! |
Two weeks ago in German we learned different food names and how to interact in the Naschmarkt and other shopping situations. We were split up into 6 groups and assigned to get different quantities of certain foods. I had to get 10 dag Schicken (10 dekagrams of ham), 10 dag Salami (figure that one out for yourself), and 5 dag Extrawurst (Bologna). My group met in the Naschmarkt and searched for a place that sold cooked meat that we could buy as coldcuts. We finally found one towards the end of the market, towards Karlsplatz. I mustered up the courage and spoke with the verkäuferin (saleswoman), who was very patient with me and my probably jumbled up German. We brought our meat to class, where we all had to present our purchases. We then got to eat all the delicious food! Frau made a traditional Austrian dip, called der Liptauer. I have the recipe if you’re interested in creating a delicious Austrian treat… it tastes really good with bread or vegetables.

The Stadtsoper |
Friday night I went with some friends to my first opera, Romeo and Juliet! We waited on the standing room line for about an hour and a half, and paid only €4 for what I believe were some of the best seats (or stands…) in the house! We were directly in front of the stage, about 20 rows of seats back. We were all very excited to see Romeo and Juliet, expecting the traditional show with beautiful scenes, costumes, etc. We learned that this is not what we were in for, however, when Juliet came onstage wearing jeans and a black tank top, holding a microphone, and started belting out opera. There were flames shooting out of stage. It was definitely not what we expected but fun nonetheless. The singing and music was beautiful, and definitely more than worth €4.
After the opera, I came home and began packing for my 9 day trip to Germany! I’ll probably be posting about that for at least a week, I took over ONE THOUSAND photos and have so much to say about the trip. Get excited… and Glücklich Valentinstag!
