Ich möchte einen Zwetschgenkuchen.

While winding down from all the excitement from the ball, I realized that I had not posted for quite some time! On Saturday I wrote that the last three days had been so crazy, busy, fun, etc, and I never elaborated about what I did on Friday and Saturday.  Here we go!

On Friday morning we were all exhausted from the ball, as we didn't get to sleep until well past 4, so Frau Summesberger decided we should meet at a cafe!  We went to school to drop off our Hausübung (homework) and were given directions to the cafe, in German of course.  I left with my classmates Bailey, Michelle, and Kent.  We were the second group to leave and the last to arrive at the cafe... unfortunately we didn't quite understand the directions.  We thought they said turn right at the fountain when they actually said the fountain will be on your right.  Not a big deal, especially when in a friendly city like Vienna.  We asked a group of Viennese women where to go and they sent us on our way.

The Palmenhauskaffee is a cafe inside the Hofburg greenhouse.  There were trees everywhere, and tons of different coffees and cakes to try.  Frau reserved a table for our class and we had a great time.  Since last week we studied directions and how to order food in a cafe, we got to practice both of our newly acquired vocabularies.  I ordered "eine heisse Schokolade, ein Glas Orangensaft, und einen Zwetschgenkuchen," a hot chocolate, glass of orange juice, and a plum cake.  They were alldeeeeeellliiiicccciiiooousss.  Epsecially the Zwetschgenkuchen.  My roommate Ellison and I both ordered it, and are still talking about how sweet and delicious it was; we will probably have to go back sometime this week to get some.

Later that day my friend Ben had a bunch of us over to his apartment in the 16th district for dinner! He made a delicious pasta sauce and we had a great time.  Afterwards, a group of us went to the Ottakringer Brewery.  This beer brewery has a party 4 times every year, and Friday just happened to be one of those nights! It was really cool, really crowded, and I left relatively early since I didn't get any real sleep the night before.

Saturday my apartment-mate Kristen and I went exploring around Vienna.  She wanted to try Cafe Demel, so I went again.  On line for a table we met two 2009 graduates of BC (where Kristen goes to school), and ended up eating with them.  They were only in Vienna for 36 hours, and wanted to know the must-see and -do things of Vienna.  We gave them a long list of things to see and do and it really made me feel like a real Wiener.  After leaving the Americans, we walked around the Stephansplatz area of the first district, and found two beautiful churches, Saint Michael's and Saint Peter's.

Sunday Ellison and I went to the Museum Judenplatz, a small Jewish Museum in the first district.  The main Jewish museum of Vienna is closed until June for renovations, and this one was really interesting despite its small size.  The exhibits focused on the lives of Jewish people in Medieval Europe, and there were ruins of the oldest synagogue in Europe.  Outside the museum was the memorial for Jews killed by the Nazis in the 30s and 40s.  It was an odd-looking yet beautiful memorial comprised of thousands of books making a block.  After walking around Judenplatz we walked towards Stephansplatz, and, walking right by Mozart's former residence, stumbled into a protest about Egypt.  The protestors were all chanting in German, "Aus aus mit Mubarak!" and carrying signs about Egypt.  It was a very cool thing to see, especially since I have never really seen a protest going on before!

This week has been relatively relaxing.  I got an A on my second German exam! We are learning how to buy food, and tomorrow morning I have to be up bright and early to meet with 2 of my classmates to buy an assortment of meats.  Wish me luck! It's the final week of Intensive German, and next week we have a break.  I, along with 30 something of my fellow IES-ers, am going on a 10 day 3 city tour of Berlin, Dresden, and Leipzig, with a stop in Prague along the way!! I'm really looking forward to it! But before that I have to take my German final... Tschüss!
